🛏️ The Twin & Twin XL: Keep it Standard
For single beds, whether it’s in a kid’s room, a dorm, or a guest room, simplicity is key.
- The Go-To Size: Standard (20" x 26")
- The Look: A single Standard pillow fits perfectly across the width of a Twin bed.
- Styling Tip: If you want to add a pop of color or extra back support for reading, layer a smaller 18" x 18" square accent pillow in front of the sleeping pillow.
🛏️ The Super Standard: The Unsung Hero of Bedding
The Super Standard sits right between the classic Standard and the Queen size. It offers a touch more room for your head and neck without dominating the bed.
- The Go-To Size: Typically 20" x 28"
- The Look: Two super standard pillows are too long to fit across a full or full XL mattress but fit well on a queen. If you prefer only having or using one pillow, a super standard would work well on a twin or full-size mattress as well.
- Styling Tip: The best way to style a Super Standard pillow is to use ahigh-quality, deep-pocket pillowcaseor a simple, solid-color case that can accommodate the slight size variation.
🛏️ The Queen: The Most Popular Choice
Queen beds offer a bit more breathing room, but you still want to avoid the "floating pillow" look.
- The Go-To Size: Two Queen Pillows (20" x 30")
- The Look: Queen pillows are 4 inches longer than Standard pillows. Two of them will span the width of the bed perfectly, creating a full, plush look.
- Can I use Standard pillows? Yes, but they might leave a few inches of gap on either side of the bed, which can look a little "empty" if you don't have a large headboard.
🛏️ The King & California King: Go Big or Go Home
For the masters of the bedroom, standard pillows often look undersized and lost on these expansive mattresses.
- The Go-To Size: Two King Pillows (20" x 36")
- The Look: King pillows are long and luxurious. Two of them will stretch almost edge-to-edge on a King bed.
- The "Euro" Upgrade: To make a King bed look professionally designed, place two or three Euro Shams (26" x 26") against the headboard. These large squares create a stunning backdrop for your sleeping pillows.
How to Measure a Pillow?
- Measuring a pillow doesn’t seem to be a hard task, but when done incorrectly, you’ll get inaccurate measurements. Rather than using a soft, tailor’s measuring tape, use a firm, carpenter’s tape measure. Hold two corners of the pillow to the ground and measure from one end to the other.
- When measuring, make sure not to do so diagonally or from the center to any side of the pillow. You’ll also notice the pillow dimensions listed above are all whole numbers. It may take some rounding, but your measurements should be whole numbers as well.
- We’re all different and therefore need different pillows.
